Sᴄᴇɴᴛ Like a burning fire, Baiju's scent is warm and comforting, holding notes of spice, cedar wood, and leather.ᴠᴏɪᴄᴇ ᴄʟᴀɪᴍ Joel Kinnaman, Henry Cavil - Link, Link, Link, Link
A deep rasp, akin to raking over hot coals. Baiju seldom speaks, preferring to communicate through pointed looks and the occasional grunt of disapproval. He will sometimes voice low growls or rumbling trills when something pleases him.ᴀᴇᴛʜᴇʀ Baiju's aether is turbulent, like a writhing mass of black magma. Often producing too much, he has to seek out ways in which to exhaust it. Those who possess aether sight may be frightened by his presence, if not by his demeanor alone. His aetheric signature can linger behind after a rampage and perhaps even burn those who stray too close.
Description At first glance, Baiju may appear to be a Xaela. With predominantly black scales across his body, they are thicker and more numerous than most and cover his skin like armor. However, certain areas along his arms and back consist of patches of gold, making his heritage clear to the dicerning eye. These same patches may alternate between white and gold depending on the time of year. Similarly, when speaking, one might spy the blue raen tongue he possesses... assuming the mouth full of sharp fangs does not get you first.Standing at 244cm, Baiju is an intimidating figure to behold. With jet black hair and sharp gold eyes, he possesses a muscular but lean build. Numerous scars cover his body from his time in the Steppe as well as his work in the world beyond, crossing over both scale and flesh alike. From his hands to his elbows, his neck and chest, the skin has become a gradient of black. Corrupted by his strange aether, in times of intense stress his hands might even shake as something draws from him, demanding to break free. The most notable physical feature of Baiju's is his broken right horn. While au ra have the ability to regenerate their tails and horns, years of fighting have led to it being damaged beyond repair. It can no longer regenerate fully. In its place, there is a metalic insertion with a matching cover over the end of his left horn. This makes it appear as though both are unharmed and merely decorated, but his hearing in his right aural (ear/horn) is noticably diminished.

Miscellaneous / Trivia
Augmented - The Garleans were not kind during the years in which Baiju was allied with them. As part of their ever increasing demands, he was coerced into becoming a test subject for a variety of experiments. Because of this, his body was forcibly augmented against his will with the use of magitek. These augmentations are discrete, barely rising above the skin, and are largely internal.Painted Scales - Baiju is of mixed xaela/raen heritage, resulting in an odd and fairly distinct scale pattern. Those who knew him in the Steppe would be able to identify him from this alone. In order to avoid this, he has taken to painting these scales black to more easily disguise himself amongst the other xaela who have found their way to Eorzea.Body Language - While normally relaxed, one might notice a change in Baiju's body language when stressed. The scales along his tail will raise, becoming spiked and rasor sharp to the touch. He may also let out a low, gutteral, rumbling noise in the presence of a perceived threat. However, if he is surrounded by those who are vulnerable, he will actively relax the scales, causing them to lay flat against his skin. When like this, they are smooth and unable to catch on fabric or cause injury. In most day to day situations, his tail remains somewhere between these two states.Creature Within - Something stirrs deep inside and Baiju is fearful of what it is. He does not know when it appeared, whether it was with him all along or part of one of the many experiments he endured, but all he knows is that he is cursed. Cursed and possessed by a being far beyond his understanding, and one that seeks only violence. It draws aether from him like a siphon, and when there is not enough... it drives him to seek it out elsewhere.

Personality

---|---|---|
Reserved | Direct | Abrasive |
Kind | Serious | Aggressive |
Loyal | Protective | Hedonistic |
Upon first meeting Baiju, most will take note that he is rather reserved. Often keeping to himself, his outward demeanor can seem unwelcoming. Whether this is intentional or not is not entirely clear. He is a man of few words but many a pointed look. Much can be converyed via the eyes, and those who are familiar with Qestir behaviors and their variant tribes may be able to spot the similarities.Seldom does Baiju speak, and when he does his words can be abrasive. More often than not, he is a mirror to what it shown to him. If approached with aggression, he will react accordingly in a cold manner. However, if spoken to with kindness, he is noticably more careful with his words. Direct in his approach to most things in life, Baiju sees the mincing of words as a waste of time. He cares very little for the feelings of others and is often quite serious and distrusting of those around him. However, he is not always unpleasant.A different, gentler, side of the au ra may be found when around those weaker than him, such as the chronically ill. Often, he will bring back trinkets from his hunts to give as gifts to the sickly. It is not uncommon to find him working for healers and retrieving supplies. For those unable to care for themselves, he may even run errands should they ask for his help. He has since been given the name "Lahn'ti", as some are unable to pronounce his name, thus this version has stuck among the locals. He is particularly protective over those who suffer from incurable illnesses. It is unclear why he puts so much time into helping those who may never repay him, but some speculate that he is trying to repent for something he did in this life or the last.
Addictions
Combat - Made for war, and raised under constant threat of annihilation, Baiju cannot escape the scars of the past. His time in the Steppe instilled in him a need to seek out violence and shed blood, be it his own or another's. For this reason, it is not uncommon to find him either working or taking part in illegal fighting pits and other arenas. Following his exile, fighting is the only thing that makes him feel alive.

Likes | Combat, food, even more food (yes, really), fish, soft things |
Dislikes | Doors, ceiling lamps/fans |
Afflictions | C-PTSD, ??? |
Fears | Large bodies of water |
- Cause: Repeated Waterboarding. Following his forced enlistment with the Garlaens, and the practices used to incentivise better performance among their soldiers whenever they faltered, Baiju has a crippling fear of water.

background
Summary
- Born into a mixed tribe of Raen/Xaela, his mother died during child birth. Faced discrimination for his muddy heritage throughout his life.- As Bhailahn grew older, he was forced to prove his place among the tribes repeatedly, as Raen were seen to be weak. This was further emphasized by his father's failing health.- As his father grew more ill, Bhailahn sought out every healer in the Steppe but all failed to find the cause of the illness. Out of desperation, Bhailahn turned to the invading Garleans for help.- In exchange for information on the tribes, he received medicine to treat his father, but it would only suppress the symptoms. Without advanced medical knowledge, Bhailahn was unaware that he was being strung along.- As more demands were placed upon him by the Garleans, Bhailahn reimmersed himself in Steppe culture, fighting his way to the the top and establishing himself among its most vicious warriors.- Requiring soldiers, the Garleans drafted Bhailahn as they faced multiple coordinated assaults from resistance fighters. Bhailahn's mate at the time discovered his secret and reported it to the tribes.- In retaliation, the Xaela tribes banded together and slaughtered Bhailahn's tribe, including his father. When Bhailahn returned, it was to find nothing but ash and bone.- In a rage, Bhailahn went on a rampage throughout the Steppe. He killed many, but was eventually overwhelmed. Death seen as too good a punishment now that he had lost his tribe, he was instead exiled. However, not all agree with this decision and still wish to see him hunted down like a dog.- Bhailahn has since taken on the name of 'Baiju', given to him by a sailor who helped him escape the East after a particularly brutal encounter with another Xaela. This same sailor took him to Eorzea to start a new life, though he is still hunted to this day.

A Closer Look . . .
Bhailahn is a Raen/Xaela mix, with his father being a raen and his mother a xaela. His mother was promised to a tribe chief, but refused in favor of a raen. This resulted in them both being exiled and her and her small tribe being forced to live on the very outskirts of the Steppe. She died upon having Bhailahn, leaving him in the care of his father. Because of this, he was largely discriminated against and often harassed not only for his mixed heritage, but also for having 'killed' his mother. At least that is what the other tribes claimed, seeing him as a curse more than anything. His family were largely viewed as outsiders since the Xaela among them were originally of one of the major tribes but had separated and formed their own minor one long ago, one that was later joined by a small group of raens. When the threat of the Garleans invaded their lands, only a handful stayed behind while the rest of their tribe fled. Forced closer to the other Xaela tribes as a result, conflict broke out often. Bhailahn did his best to fit in, but it was never enough given his mixed blood. Getting food on the table to begin with was already difficult as many would actively fight the few of his small tribe that remained for any resources they possessed. Some even being hunted for bloodsport, as they were not seen as Xaela anymore and merely prey. Fraternising with the other tribes was not an option and his tribe, unfortunately, often lost these conflicts. For as long as Bhailahn could remember, his father was always ill and very frail. While their healer initially took care of him and kept him stable, she was killed in an altercation with one of the other Xaela tribes when they invaded their territory. As his father's condition worsened, Bhailahn was forced to grow up quickly in order to take care of himself, his father, and others ailing in the tribe. This worsened when he reached adulthood. It is not clear as to what was causing their sickness, but some believed it to be poison. Where it came from is unknown, though it is speculated a rival tribe may have been at fault, and no herbs they knew of could cure it. Only abate the symptoms temporarily. Bhailahn went to the nearby tribes for help, but was turned away. Even forcibly removed. Out of desperation, he then went to the Garleans. They, seeing an opportunity, offered him medicine and a doctor to treat his tribe. In exchange, he would be forced to become a soldier and informant. This went on for a few years, and during this time he was tasked with observing the other tribes and reporting on their movements. But, the Garleans were not kind to him. Their demands grew ever higher over the years, from scouting missions to forcibly augmenting his body against his will. If he failed to procure information that was of value to them, or submit to their wishes, they would withhold medicine, halt their aid, and his people suffered on multiple occasions when he tried to resist until, finally, he gave up.In order to avoid suspicion, he fought to establish himself among the tribes. Lacking proper experience from his strange upbringing, he was beaten and humiliated many times at first, but soon grew more and more vicious and violent as time went on until he finally earned some semblance of respect among those of the Steppe. At least enough for his tribe to, for the most part, be left alone out of fear that he would appear and retaliate. He was known for making those he fought suffer, and horribly. At least that is what they say. At some point, the Garlean outpost within that area found itself in a tight spot as they were getting attacked from all sides, forcing them to draft all the forces they had. Bhailahn, being considered a soldier, was among those forced to join their ranks. It did not take long after that for news of this to reach the Steppe. A man he loved had visited his tribe and, after looking for Bhailahn, would track him down to the Garlean camp where he found him in uniform. This man immediately informed his chieftain of what they had seen, causing outrage and news of his betrayal to spread like wildfire. Bhailahn was quickly branded a traitor, as any attempts to fight off the Garleans, or push them out of their territories thus far had been met with failure. Whether that be from Bhailahn being an informant or not was irrelevant. In response, his people were hunted down and slaughtered to set an example for any who might follow in his path. Bhailahn had not been present at this time, stationed at a far away outpost to fight off a group of resistance fighters in another area. When he returned home, he found no one left, only old blood stains and burned down tents. Overcome with grief, he went into a rage shortly after, blinded by pain of having lost his tribe. But, one man can only do so much. He was quickly overwhelmed, beaten, broken and captured by the other tribes. Death was seen as too good a punishment for him, thus he was forced into exile. With his tribe now gone, the weight of their deaths would forever hang on his shoulders, as would the brand of a traitor. This did not stop others from hunting him, however, seeing it as their duty to kill him as he remains a stain on their people's reputation. After a particularly vicious encounter with another Xaela who sought to kill him, he was forced to leave the land he called home forever.Found by a hyur man as he lay dying, his attacker already dead, they nursed Bhailahn back to health. While Bhailahn was reluctant to give his true name, or speak much at all, this did not deter the hyur. Instead, they named him 'Baiju', and offered to ferry him far away from his home land and allow for him to have a fresh start. Thus, Baiju now roams Eorzea as an independant mercenary. In the years following his exile, Baiju managed to find work as a mercenary. Initially a street rat who could barely get by, he became known for his efficiency, loyalty, and discretion. Utilizing his combat prowess, he has earned a name for himself in both legitimate and criminal circles alike. Known for his high success rate in retrieval of artefacts, stolen goods, and dangerous materials, he is especially sought after by healers and alchemists of all varieties. Regardless of what needs be done, so long as he is paid he will do it. Be it guarding ships, cargo, carrying out odd jobs here and there, he cares little about the specifics. While he tries to maintain a low profile and avoid conflict where necessary, he has remained as abrasive and aggressive a man as he was in the Steppe. Likely as a means of protecting himself and warding off those fearful of drawing his ire. Even so, there are those who still endeavour to seek him out and hunt him down. Some are au ra, and others opportunistic bounty hunters wishing to collect. Regardless of who they are, they're all dead men walking.

Core Relations
* Relationships with characters who have had a consistent or significant impact on Baiju's life and are considered part of his canon.

Shiryu • Mate • Deceased • (NPC)"We always knew it would end this way. Did you not hear the crows singing, dear heart?" - "..."Bhailahn's former partner and other half. Shiryu betrayed him in the Steppe, resulting in the death of his tribe, and was among the first to fall to the rae'la's ensuing rampage. It was later discovered he was a member of the Moks tribe, not Dotharl, and had ulterior motives following his discovery of Bhailahn's secret. Baiju actively suppresses his memory of the man, avoiding any and all mentions of him and, by extension, the Steppe.

W'akatsu • Chirurgeon • Alive"I don't have time for you. Find Ishka, you two seem to get along well." - "..." -Suffering internally.-A miqo'te who has seen more war and conflict than even Baiju. They have an agreement, one where Baiju receives treatment for his aetheric abnormality in exchange for gathering herbs for the Seeker... so long as he doesn't break down anymore doors.

Ishka • 'Friend' • Alive"--And that's why the stars shine so brightly! Hey, hey! Are you list--," - "Stop. Talking."A young and bubbly female au ra who greatly annoys Baiju. Yet, he is not unkind to her like he is with most who cross his path. She acts as an assistant at W'akatsu's clinic and is often the only one able to 'deal' with the brutish au ra. She has patched him up on a number of occasions, and for that he is grateful. If only she would stop babbling about her latest theories regarding celestial bodies and prying into his work. Annoying but useful.

Synfael • Jerk??? • Alive"Can't you ever enter without leaving a path of destruction?" - "..." -Actively eyeing the door.-A totally normal necromancerdoctor whom Baiju works for. The two au ra have a tumultuous relationship. Baiju broke down the man's front door, demanding for an alchemist said to be able to cure anything. What he expected to meet was a weak elezen, not another, larger, xaela to give him a thrashing for breaking and entering. He is currently seeking treatment from him in exchange for acting as his bodyguard. While they fight often, Baiju is rather protective of the xaela.

Zagreus • 'Friend' • Alive"Cease your whinging." - "My WHAT?!"The Jaskier to Baiju's Geralt. These two are chaotic together and always getting into trouble. While Zag has a heart of gold and a song to play for every occasion, Baiju is a notorious grump and often nitpicks at the other's 'lackluster singing.' Zagreus is the only one Baiju truly considers to be akin to his blood and may occasionally refer to him as such, though often accompanied by an insult.

Valerius • ?! • Alive"A creature like you should have never been born." - "I guess that makes two of us."The lion, the witch, the audacity of this bi--The two au ra do not get along at all. A xaela of unknown origins, infected by the void and with an even stranger name. Valerius is not the first to hunt Baiju across continents, but is by far the closest to have come to killing him. Their encounters are often violent and bloody, leaving one or the other near mortally wounded each time.
Miscellaneous Relationships
* Characters who have interacted with Baiju and whose canon may vary. Notes may later be moved to core relations depending on further development and overall impact.

Bairen • 'Songbird' / Friend • Alive"Songbird." "What?" -trips over air.-A sweet and friendly raen who has managed to somehow 'befriend' Baiju. They rarely meet, but their relationship is a pleasant one and Baiju enjoys listening to the raen sing, often falling asleep to his song. Baiju believes Bairen would have made for a wonderful Qalli in another life.

"Raeyn" • AsshoRival • Alive, unfortunately."Must you always act like such a moody bitch?" "... Pot. Kettle. Black."A xaela who, like Baiju, was forced to leave the Steppe, albeit for very different reasons. They recognized each other and are aware of the other's true identity. However, a tentative truce exists between them... or rather an unspoken agreement of mutually assured destruction should one ever reveal the other's true identity. Raeyn acts as a body guard of W'akatsu, with whom they both seek treatment. This regrettably means they must talk on occasion. Disgusting.

* Interested in romancing my character? Please note that, while I am happy to plot out romance, my characters are strictly monogamous. AU romances are fine and can take a variety of forms, from FWBs, one offs, to something deeper. However, these will not carry over into my character's canonical storyline unless discussed prior. I also do not typically write PwP romances and have a strong preferrence for slowburn and genuine connections.
Ground Rules
1 . I prefer to rp with those of a similar style to my own and those who will actively contribute to the rp's story.2 . When it comes to IC and OOC, I keep them separate. I am not my character, nor do they represent my personal beliefs or behaviors. I expect my RP partners to be mature enough to make this distinction and do the same.3 . If I feel that our styles, characters, or something does not mesh well, I will tell you. If I lose interest in an RP or feel uncomfortable, you will be informed and we can work it out. However, I in turn expect those I RP with to do the same and communicate properly with me.4 . Keep in mind basic RP etiquette when power scaling and the lore surrounding such things. My characters are often low-moderate in power, and I do not RP with WoLs or other typically game breaking individuals without prior discussion.5 . My characters do not do well with easily spooked, clingy, or overly anxious characters. While usually kind to varying degrees, they are often times serious and will not coddle you and are more direct than most. Please keep this in mind.

Casual
Drinks On Me - (ST)
Baiju occasionally visits bars and other businesses after completing a contract. Be it to unwind or work as one of their security, it is not hard to spot the unusual au ra among the crowds. Curious about his strange markings, scars, or simply the novelty of his standoffish presence? Offering a drink might act as a good ice breaker... Though don't be surprised if he is less than chatty. There are few things in life he hates more than small talk.We Don't Talk AboutFight Club - (ST)
It is not uncommon to find Baiju fighting someone, something, somewhere. Similarly, picking a fight with him is often the quickest way to garner his attention. Be it a well known business or a seedy underground fighting ring, it matters little to him. Only that he can satiate his bloodlust. Win or lose, he will still respect that you tried and may be motivated to initiate a conversation after, often with questions regarding a certain moveset or weapon he may not be familiar with.A Healer's Remedy - (ST & LT)
Given Baiju's line of work, he can often be found visiting a healer in one of the major cities. While he may have some basic medical knowledge to keep himself alive and stitch closed minor injuries, those of greater significance or longer lasting require a more experienced touch. Those who treat him are often people he forms a strong bond with. Maybe you are one of these healers, or an apprentice of their practice. You may notice that Baiju is far kinder towards those he trusts, and may even hear that his usual rumbling carries a slightly sweeter undercurrent.Contracts
Hunted - (ST & LT), (C)
Whether you have made an enemy of someone influential, commited a crime, or just have a poor reputation among the Grand Companies and need to be dealt with, Baiju has been given a mark and is on your trail. Perhaps you can evade him, or perhaps you can weasel your way out by talking. Regardless, Baiju does not seem so keen on relenting. Fight or flight, let's see how you get out of this one.A Conflict of Interests - (ST & LT), (C)
A fairly lucrative contract was posted and you took it up. Somehow, there was a mix up. Baiju got the same one and he is not keen on sharing. Now, stood over the body or object of your bounty, you have to contend with an unusual looking 'xaela' in addition to what other threats remain. Perhaps you can convince him to share the spoils? The scowl on his face can't be that bad, can it?Once The Hunter, Now The Prey - (ST & LT), (C)
Baiju has made many enemies over the years. Be you a xaela from the Steppe or an opportunistic hunter looking to get paid, there is a sizeable bounty on his head that remains to be collected. Perhaps you will be lucky and get your pay day... or maybe you will just be another body added to the pile left in his wake. Tread carefully.
- Note: This hook does not include character death, only fighting.
Crime Related
Where the Crows Gather - (ST)
Even among the underground, there exist hotspots where people from various walks of life gather to converse and relax. Baiju occasionally visits such places, be it a speakeasy, a brothel, or otherwise. Often acting as security, occasionally he may be found as a protected patron due to his connections to or a favor owed by the owners of the establishment. Perhaps you meet him there and recognize him, or perhaps you don't and something about the au ra catches your eye.Noble Hound - (LT)
Member of Ul'Dahn nobility, or some other high ranking society? Then you have more than likely seen or even run into Baiju on occasion acting as a bodyguard. Often sought after for his abilities in combat, rumor has it he does not care what business his clients conduct and has no qualms breaking a few necks in protecting them. Perhaps you are looking for a bodyguard, or perhaps you are one of those he is protecting his client from.Aetheric Anomaly - (ST & LT)
Baiju's aether is chaotic and rotten, burning through him daily. This causes him to seek out healers who specialize in unusual aetheric conditions, but not everyone is keen on treating a void infused beast. While he always uses a false name, more often than not he has been reported to the local authorities who are all too willing to kill him. This has led to Baiju seeking out healers of less than legal backgrounds.Release the Hounds - (LT), (C)
Have a problem? Need it fixed? Someone owe you money, debt collector on your back, or a rival who just won't quit? Baiju is well known among the criminal underworld for his ability to track down and eliminate threats with ease. For a price, or a favor, he could very easily take care of what is troubling you... just don't be surprised by the mess he leaves behind.Voidsent Related
Voidbound - (ST & LT, Limited/Restricted), (C)
The creature that lurks inside this strange xaela is animalistic, bordering on feral. It cannot be reasoned with and, beneath a trained eye, one might be able to spy the xaela struggling to maintain control. From the clench of his jaw, the furrow of his brow, the way he looks pale or shudders oddly on occasion. He is barely holding on. The creature is hungry, but not for those its kind ususually prey upon, no. It wishes to consume its own. Be you a voidsent, or having formed an unfortunate pact with one, this xaela has been set on your trail. Or, are you a hunter who has been sent after him? Whatever may be the case, blood will be spilled.Garlean Mutt - (ST & LT, Limited/Restricted), (C)
Are you a Garlean? Were you a scientist or soldier in charge of their most guarded secrets and weapons? Or canon fodder sent to the front, left to be slaughtered by the horrific beings and machines they unleashed? Maybe you remember the creature they experimented on, then. A screaming, raging, thing that left nothing but blood and death in its wake. Were you kind or were you cruel? Maybe it still remembers you. Choose your words wisely if you decide to approach him, as Baiju does not take kindly to the old occupation and his memory is severely warped due to the trauma he endured.
